Parents in Training by Barbara McMahon
Discovering she's pregnant fills Annalise with joy! She doesn't have a clue about babies, but with her husband by her side they can learn the ropes together.....But Dominic feels shellshocked by the news.
The truth is that he's still reeling from an unhappy experience of parenthood from his past - a fact he's kept secret from everyone, even his beloved Annalise. So even while he longs to share her pleasure and excitement, the fear that history might repeat itself is keeping him from the one person he loves most - his wife. Now its up to her to prove that he really can be a daddy in a million!
This wasn't a traditional love story as it began with a couple who were happily married but faced with a situation that they never expected to face and also it ended with a couple who were happily married. There was a realisation and message in the story that love can conquer all that came across clearly.
I hated the way Dominic reacted to the news of Annalise's pregnancy. He dropped the bombshell of his past and then left to go to Hong Kong on business. He sounded very selfish. His words to Annalise about the pregnancy were very brutal. His reasoning for not telling her about his past was just that it was over and he wanted to start anew. It was understandable after what he had been through but he should have told her during the 6 years they were together. Instead of heading home as soon as his business was completed in Hong Kong he went off to somewhere else for business. He never once thought what this was doing to the woman he loves.
Although the news of the pregnancy was unexpected to Annalise it was also bittersweet as it came with the realisation that her marriage may not survive this revelation. Dominic obviously worked through his problems on his own (at his insistence) Annalise had a lot of support from her family (she comes from a family of eleven children!) to help her through Dominic's acceptance of this pregnancy.
I thought Annalise response to this upheaval in her life was a little crazy - buying a house without talking to her husband about it. I found it really good in a way as she wasn't just twiddling her thumbs while he was away, she was doing something constructive and making plans for her baby.
Yes Dominic and Annalise had discussed a childless marraige and I can understand after learning of the past that Dominic has had which has reinforced his refusal to have children but a discussion of all reasons should have happened between the couple.
Anyway I didn't enjoy the story as much as usual but did find some of it interesting. The hero came across as too selfish but the heroine was a gutsy young woman who decided to get on with what life gave her. Annalise though was abit too quick in talking about life with a baby after dropping the bombshell of her pregnancy to a shellshocked Dominic. She should have given him some time to think and come to terms with it. It was good in a way that Annalise made her wishes known regarding the birth of the baby and that she was indeed having it. That way he knows where she stands in the baby situation.
I would give this book 7/10.
