Payton Reese has climbed mountains all over the world. Now because of a climbing accident he's a sportscaster covering NASCAR. He sees his way of getting out of Charlotte by covering the families of NASCAR. The Grosso's, Murphy's, and Branches. While covering the Murphy's he befriends the elusive Rachel Murphy, the teams engine specialist. Rachel is elusive because she doesn't want to get hurt. She carries the pain from her childhood around with her to insulate her from getting closer to people especially men. Her flings have been numerous and she can't risk becoming to close to Payton, who is dealing with his own demons.
This is the second NASCAR book I've read and it was great. It was exciting like NASCAR is.
