Price of Passion by Susan Napier (HP)
Back Cover:
Kate had learned certain lessons as Drake Daniels's lover:
Lesson number one: the price of loving Drake was not to love him.
Lesson number two: never give him what he expected.
Discovering she was pregnant certainly fulfilled lesson number two. Drake had made it clear commitment and children were not on his menu. Now Kate must break her news. But when she sees Drake, passion kicks in, begging to be indulged again… just once!
Spoiler Warning: All my reviews contain spoilers to some degree
Favourite Scene:
When Kate looked down from this fascinating piece of engineering Drake was stepping out of the last of his clothes, exposing himself without false modesty to her wide-eyed gaze, his large hands, curled into loose fists, hanging quietly at his sides, the angle of the lights painting intriguing shadows in the hollows of his sculpted perfection.
‘I want to make love to you now,’ he told her with arrogant confidence.
‘So I see,’ she said shakily, trying to look and sound blasé.
Another Fav Scene: (it's always fun to make a few obscene hand gestures)
‘What about Kiss Me Kate with the sexy silver eyes—will she be coming, too?’
‘She doesn’t play pool.’ Drake slammed her door with unnecessary force and got behind the wheel.
‘She could hold our beers!’ The gravelly yell that had sold a million albums degenerated into a burst of coughing as the Land Rover did a sharp turn past him, kicking up a cloud of dust into his face.
Drake pulled his arm back inside the open window and turned onto the black tarmac.
‘Did you just make an obscene gesture at him?’ said Kate disapprovingly.
‘He did it first.’
Sure enough, as she looked out the back window she could see Steve Marlow’s black-clad figure extending a crudely upthrust finger at the departing vehicle.
My Review:
(misleading back cover, they are in no rush to indulge their passion again "just once", that totally wasn't the issue or the point to the heroine seeking out the hero)
Interesting, the H/h have been lovers for two years, but aren't really a "couple". I love how he walks into her kitchen and starts commenting on the food that is there, not realizing that he's commenting on food that seems decidedly meant for a pregnant woman's restrictive diet... I like the witty and intellectual banter the H/h share, it shows they are well-matched, they both live in the publishing world. I liked that the obstacle for them was not a third party, instead what divided them for the two years they were together was their unwillingness to let their guard down, be vulnerable, and be the one to risk having a real honest full relationship rather than just sex.
I liked how insulted and annoyed he was that she was using a LIBRARY copy of his book, rather than having bought a copy of her own. It was sweet that the hero went pale when the heroine threw up after having a minor bump in her car, he was concerned about her. The scene where the heroine thought she killed the hero's dog was cute, she threw herself into his arms and hugged him, pushing her wet face into his chest, and his chest vibrated with laughter because it was a mistake. On the way home from the vet, they pulled over and made out, and got passed by not one, but TWO of his friends before they smartened up and took their hands out from each other's clothes, the heroine blushing red. Another funny moment with the heroes friends: the heroine offers to dress in a short skirt and low cut top to distract his friends while they're playing pool, to help the hero along. The ending tied things up nicely and sweetly, in a funny way.
My Rating: 4/5 stars, this was a unique H/h relationship. I liked it.

This one sounds pretty cute.
This one sounds pretty cute. It is sounds like a lovers to friends book. This is going on the list.
Margie :)
yeah... Margie that's
yeah... Margie that's right... business acquaintances to passionate lovers to friends ... then comes love.
It was a nice read. And there's fidelity during their 2 1/2 year relationship. I always like to point that out when I see it.
A funny thing to note.... I think Susan Napier has a fetish for first chapters. In so many of the books I've read from her this year, I've noticed that the first chapter builds up the introduction of the characters... and then we get a BOMB dropped on us.
In this case, the heroine knocks on the hero's door and they have a tense moment where she acts casual, but it's clear she knows him from somewhere and we don't know WHY she's there... but it's not a coincidence.... and then we get the bomb dropped at the end of the chappy when the hero follows her back to her cottage and says "are you stalking me? So why are you pretending you don't know me when we've been lovers for two years?"
Other shockers...
Secret Admirer... the hero (and his date) are trapped in an elevator with the heroine. It's hot. The heroine's wearing a mink coat and she's acting very nervous and holding onto it for dear life. The hero gets frustrated and yanks open her coat... to find she's naked but for a pair of rosebud panties underneath, and SMACK! the lights go out. What a shock.
Tempt me Not... the heroine is at a party of the hero's.... she's trying to convince him she's not the lover of David, a man dating the hero's sister. The hero finally starts to believe. Then he catches David helping her with a ripped item of clothing. And the heroine drops the bomb saying "Me? David? David's my stepson!" (the heroine is married currently to David's older father)
In Bed with the Boss... the heroine is at work, she's dropped a letter on the hero's desk and she's worried about his reaction.... he comes in and confronts her about resigning. She says she's moving on personally, she's a widow who just took off her rings, the hero is happy about this because he's been in love with her for years and is gloriously pleased she's moving on... then she drops that it's because she's gotten ENGAGED to his RIVAL that she's quitting. And all hell breaks loose, the hero goes wild.
