Price of Passion by Susan Napier ~ Harlequin Modern Love
Ratings:
Excellence: Great
Steaminess Factor: Sensual
Description & Critique:
Kate had been his lover for two years with still no sign of commitment so when she finds herself pregnant, she knows she must go find her lover and see if he can accept this situation. Drake is in his hideaway. No one is supposed to know where he is. That is where he writes from and where he insists on living in total seclusion. So, he’s quite shocked to find that Kate has tracked him down and rented the Beach House next to his for a whole month. Kate gets a surprise of her own when she discovers Drake shacked up with Melissa! What next? Would she tell him about her baby?
It’s taken me quite some time to get through this book. It was mostly for lack of time than because the story wasn’t interesting.
In the few Susan Napier books I’ve read so far, I find she crafts some interesting leading men and women. They’re a tad different from your usual leading man and leading lady. I really enjoy her characters.
In this story, so many assumptions were made by the leading lady that she has no idea how much she means to Drake. She was so busy trying to play by his rules that she missed out on all the affection she could have gotten from him all along.
Drake definitely has more demons than any leading man should. My heart bled for the child he must have been. I love the way he grew and started showing Kate how he felt about her using gestures instead of words. It was nice to see him move passed his demons. Love and family were not for him in the beginning but he worked at it.
This story has a lot of tense moments and the story is build a little differently. Of course there’s the build up to the end and the resolution but the main crisis point happens earlier in the book when Drake discovers Kate is pregnant. Between this main crisis and the resolution, there’s a lot of discovery between Drake and Kate, not to mention a lot of love and affection. I love the way Susan Napier tells a story.
The pets, a dog called Prince and a cat called Koshka, were a nice addition to the story and played an interesting role in bring about certain events in the story.
I highly recommend this book.
Favourite Scene:
My favourite scene is when Kate is upset with Drake and to get rid of him, she tells him: “Go write a novel!” or something to that effect. It was cute, firm and to the point.

So this took you a while to
So this took you a while to get INTO, but by the end you liked it?
And you like Susan Napier's style... me too. I've really enjoyed the stories she comes up with, good balance of passion and humour along with good twists. She packs quite a punch, one thing after another usually has me choking with laughter, keeps surprising me.
Dropping my review.
Favourite Scene:
When Kate looked down from this fascinating piece of engineering Drake was stepping out of the last of his clothes, exposing himself without false modesty to her wide-eyed gaze, his large hands, curled into loose fists, hanging quietly at his sides, the angle of the lights painting intriguing shadows in the hollows of his sculpted perfection.
‘I want to make love to you now,’ he told her with arrogant confidence.
‘So I see,’ she said shakily, trying to look and sound blasé.
Another Fav Scene: (it's always fun to make a few obscene hand gestures)
‘What about Kiss Me Kate with the sexy silver eyes—will she be coming, too?’
‘She doesn’t play pool.’ Drake slammed her door with unnecessary force and got behind the wheel.
‘She could hold our beers!’ The gravelly yell that had sold a million albums degenerated into a burst of coughing as the Land Rover did a sharp turn past him, kicking up a cloud of dust into his face.
Drake pulled his arm back inside the open window and turned onto the black tarmac.
‘Did you just make an obscene gesture at him?’ said Kate disapprovingly.
‘He did it first.’
Sure enough, as she looked out the back window she could see Steve Marlow’s black-clad figure extending a crudely upthrust finger at the departing vehicle.
My Review:
(misleading back cover, they are in no rush to indulge their passion again "just once", that totally wasn't the issue or the point to the heroine seeking out the hero)
Interesting, the H/h have been lovers for two years, but aren't really a "couple". I love how he walks into her kitchen and starts commenting on the food that is there, not realizing that he's commenting on food that seems decidedly meant for a pregnant woman's restrictive diet... I like the witty and intellectual banter the H/h share, it shows they are well-matched, they both live in the publishing world. I liked that the obstacle for them was not a third party, instead what divided them for the two years they were together was their unwillingness to let their guard down, be vulnerable, and be the one to risk having a real honest full relationship rather than just sex.
I liked how insulted and annoyed he was that she was using a LIBRARY copy of his book, rather than having bought a copy of her own. It was sweet that the hero went pale when the heroine threw up after having a minor bump in her car, he was concerned about her. The scene where the heroine thought she killed the hero's dog was cute, she threw herself into his arms and hugged him, pushing her wet face into his chest, and his chest vibrated with laughter because it was a mistake. On the way home from the vet, they pulled over and made out, and got passed by not one, but TWO of his friends before they smartened up and took their hands out from each other's clothes, the heroine blushing red. Another funny moment with the heroes friends: the heroine offers to dress in a short skirt and low cut top to distract his friends while they're playing pool, to help the hero along. The ending tied things up nicely and sweetly, in a funny way.
My Rating: 4/5 stars, this was a unique H/h relationship. I liked it.
actually, I had no trouble
actually, I had no trouble getting into it, I've just been busy. Painting, helping my Dad with the tennis web site... I think she's just great! And I have another book from her to read. Yahoo...
I never read the back cover... I just dove into the book. I've been doing that a lot lately. Besides, I find a lot of back covers misleading. This way, I'm not disapointed!

Back to school
Aside from clothes and a few labels on school articles (pens, pencils etc) I'm ready for return to school...
Yes, I hope they slow down because I really needed a break from the hustle and bustle of life... I was exhausted when my holidays came...
My Dad decided not to post the junior singles on the internet. This is good because it frees up my time but I suspect my mother had something to do with it. She probably convinced him not to which frees me up.
