Prince Caspian by C.S. Lewis
Here's another one in Julie's slow but steady race to read books this year (I'm definitely more tortoise than hare
).
The Chronicles of Narnia have been a favorite read of mine since about the fourth grade. And ever since plowing hungrily through all 7 the first time I discovered them, I've continued to go back and re-read one or more of the books almost every year since (and it's been a...ahem...few years since the fourth grade
).
I chose PRINCE CASPIAN because of the movie released earlier this year. I tend to like the books better than the movie adaptations made from them, mostly because a book has the space to contain so many more characters, more depth, and well, just more. And yes, I did go see the movie. I enjoyed it very much. There were a few differences between the two, but I must say, given the time constraints, the movie was fairly faithful to the book. No major storylines removed, though some parts were definitely expanded while others were truncated. I loved Trumpkin. I loved the slightly older version of Caspian (allowing them to indulge a little subtext that I had always read into the book about the potential for sparks between Caspian and Queen Susan). But I was frankly worried about how they would portray my favorite character, Reepicheep--the proud, honorable warrior mouse (and probably the main reason why THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER is my favorite of the Chronicles, since Reepicheep plays an even larger role).
The movie did a pretty good job with Reepicheep, though he remains a larger than life hero in my mind and in the pages of the book.
PRINCE CASPIAN isn't my favorite of the Chronicles, mostly because there's so much 'telling' of the backstory. I would have liked to have seen more 'showing'. And I'm always sad at the end, knowing Susan and Peter, especially, are growing too old to return to Narnia. But it's still a great tale. Without it, the 7 Chronicles wouldn't be complete.
