Rating: Very Good (4/5)
Cammon, a young mystic capable of reading people's emotions, is charged with protecting Princess Amalie as she decides who to marry. Her marriage is hoped to forestall a civil war between the crown and haters of mystics...but Cammon soon discovers a secret about Amalie that could tear the kingdom apart, and also begins to fall for her.
I always enjoy Sharon Shinn's combination of fantasy and romance. Cammon was one of my favourite characters from this series, so I was glad to see him getting his own novel, and I really enjoyed seeing more of Amalie.
The latter half of the novel focused a bit more on Senneth and the previous characters rather than Cammon, which took away some of my enjoyment, and I felt like the final confrontation with the villians was a bit too rushed, but overall it was still a very good novel, and the character development and worldbuilding was great as usual.
The cover of this one is nice, but the young man really doesn't look anything like how I pictured Cammon. He's much too polished...almost the opposite of how I imagined Cammon to look!
Series: Fourth book in the Twelve Houses series; I recommend starting with the first one, Mystic and Rider.
