10 years ago sheriff's deputy Dylan Matthews' brother was stabbed to death by his best friend, who then hanged himself in a jail cell after confessing and being sentenced. Dylan went undercover as a narcotics cop in Detroit to escape the rumors that he had something to do with the hanging, but he's just quit his job over his reckless disregard for his own life. Now he's come back to small town Winter Falls, MI, at just the same time as reporter Lindsey Warner, who had a wild crush on him when she was 16 and he was 22 (v. cute – she used to speed by his speed trap on purpose just to see him).

Unfortunately, it seems that the reappearance of one or both of them has reopened old wounds, and right away someone ends up dead – the lawyer who represented the best friend and had a letter from beyond the grave has just been shot. And the violence doesn't stop there ... could this all be related to the home for unwed mothers that used to be run in town or the new property development that might be going through?

There's a lot going on in this book! While the murder intrigue itself didn't do too much for me, I really like the way adoption was addressed, particularly the life long impact that placing their children had for the women in the story and the revelation of coercion involved. Lindsey's teen crush was also really well done and it was good to see these two get a chance, particularly as Dylan had wanted her too all those years ago but restrained from acting due to their ages (yay!).
