The Return of the Prodigal
The Return of the Prodigal by Kasey Michaels is the 6th book of the Beckets of Romney Marsh series. It is Rian Becket's story. The Becket family (except for Fanny) believe that Rian was killed at Waterloo. However, he was actually wounded and then taken to France by an old enemy of his family's. He is nursed back to health by the lovely Lisette, who is a part of the conspiracy to get Rian to betray his family. However, Lisette starts to have some doubts about the stories that she has been told by Rian's captors.
I don't want to give too much away about whether or not Rian makes it home safely or if Lisette can really be trusted. (Although--in regard to Lisette--I will say that like all of the series, this is a romance novel, so I am certain that an astute reader can figure out whether or not Lisette is trustworthy).
I will say that I struggled more with this novel than with any of the Becket novels, but I do not think that was truly a reflection of the novel or the series as the book is well-written and has both suspense and humor. I think that I was just getting out of a historical mode. Try as I might, I cannot make myself start the last book in the series, and I want to know how it all ends. Hopefully, the historical mode will come back to the forefront soon, so I can see the resolution of the conflict that spans all seven of the books.
