The Rich Man's Royal Mistress by Robyn Donald (HP 2575)
Back Cover:
Princess Melissa Considine of Illyria is instantly captivated by billionaire Hawke Kennedy. She throws caution to the winds and lets Hawke teach her how to love...and be loved.
But Melissa is virginal and innocent. How can she handle a man of the world like Hawke? And she's been brought up to put duty before love. But to leave Hawke's bed is to leave his life--what should she do?
Spoiler Warning: All my reviews contain spoilers to some degree
Favourite Scene:
‘Why did you come here, Hawke? When we said goodbye both of us knew it was final.’
She held her breath for the answer, appalled by her urgent, desperate desire to hear him say that their week’s lovemaking had meant more than just a fling.
He lifted a brow. ‘I could see that you thought Jacoba and I were lovers, and I came to tell you that we’re not.’
Pride drove her to fake a sophistication she didn’t possess. ‘I don’t know why it’s so important to you, but I didn’t expect anything more than the week together, if that’s what you’re—’
‘It is not,’ he broke in, his voice hard and forceful. ‘I miss you, princess. I came to see if you miss me too.’
Another Fav Scene:
You’re going to spend the next week so close to me that nothing will separate us. You’ll eat with me, swim with me, sail with me, ride with me and sleep in my bed with me until you can show me that you’re definitely not pregnant.’
‘If you insist on such close contact,’ she argued, ‘you’ll be making it more likely that I’ll end up pregnant.’
Yet Another Fav Scene:
Demurely she said, ‘I am so looking forward to that. Hawke, will you marry me, please?’
‘Yes.’
‘Just like that?’ She gazed at him in mock disappointment. ‘Perhaps you should think about it—or I might need to persuade you—?’
‘I don’t need to think, and you could probably persuade me to jump off a cliff,’ he said, and hauled her into his arms again.
My Review:
The heroine is sheltered and trying a job out on her own. The hero meets up with her, they'd been casual acquaintances before because of his friendship with her brother. They are attracted to each other and they fall into bed. The hero doesn't notice she's a virgin, but hey, I was happy to see there was no hypocrisy about her sexuality one way or the other (no madonna whore complex). The heroine does a runner and it's a believable runner, she's got plenty of reason to run away, she doesn't just not trust him the first time she hears reason to doubt him, she has three things plop into her lap which scream "this guy is not a safe to get involved with".
These reasons for dumping the hero are:
1. a female friend of his showed up the same weekend the h was there, he double booked his lovers? (no, the other woman is a platonic friend),
2. a young actress got "dumped" by the hero and had some really bad things to say (the actress lied) and
3. the hero was photographed naked embracing the heroine's future sister-in-law the night of the engagement party (it was doctored).... and she feels she must be loyal to her brother who was in love with his fiancee and was horribly betrayed.
Really, things just looked so bad, how was the heroine to know that he would end up being innocent of all three things? That surprised even me, and hey, it was nice to see a hero who wasn't guilty of jumping any female bones he saw. The heroine was never prudish or immature: she just thought (rightly so) that she deserved a man she could trust. Good for her! As soon as she made her decision, she got him away from her. This book had emotional maturity, no trivialness, no sulky "I'm not going to explain myself if she doesn't want to trust me". They talked, they confronted, they cared enough to not let go of their relationship easily.
My Rating: 4/5 stars, great couple, lots of fav scenes, emotional maturity
