Rides a Hero - Heather Graham (Pozzessere) - Slater Brothers Book 2 - Harlequin Historical #19 - March/89

Backcover Synopsis - THE WAR WAS OVER....

But, embittered by the conflict, Shannon McCahy and Malachi Slater still fought a raging battle of wills all their own.  A Yankee whose only solace was the land she had struggled to save, Shannon hated the hot-tempered Malachi, a Rebel on the run who stood for all she had come to despise.

Yet as jayhawks and bushwackers descended upon the lawless Missouri border, the two joined forces in a desperate search for their endangered loved ones.  They clashed relentlessly, but as time ran out they were forced to realize there  was something between them far stronger than hatred....

Personal Opinion - This was a reread, as I found it under the P's instead of the G's when I was reorganizing my shelves to make more room.  Imagine my astonishment when I discovered it was an very early Historical and the second book in the Slater brothers trilogy.  It was a good reminder of the hard feelings after the War between the North and the South especially in Missouri and Kansas as one had entered the Union as a Free State and one as a Slave State.  Much of the fighting there was guerilla warfare and it was the innocents who suffered because of it.  It was a compelling story but Shannon was a little too head strong for my liking as she refused to listen to those around her and did  things that she wanted instead of what was the best for the rescue.
