This is a great book with real people and real problems for those looking for real people.

Carolyn Kendal is a 34 year old divorced mother of one. She owns a bookstore .She is an only child.

Emma is her 5 year old daughter. She is in a deep coma after she suffered a brain injury in a car crash.

Stephan Foster is a 35year old lawyer. He is the middle child in a family of 3 brothers.

Ross Adams is Carolyn’s ex-husband. He was driving the car when a drunk crashed into it injuring Emma.

The story starts with Carolyn keeping vigil at her daughter’s bedside. Ross and her parents have given up hope that Emma will recover. Stephen, her childhood friend, is sent to reason with her. He ends up supporting her. Through flashbacks we learn of the summer friendship between them. Their families share neighboring beach houses each summer.

This is a really thought provoking read. I am 60 years old and enjoyed it very much. I don’t know if a 20 something single would enjoy it as I don’t have that perspective. I knew Holly Jabobs as a humorous writer from the duets line. She has threads of humor woven throughout the book. Not laugh out loud stuff but quiet smile stuff. There are numerous stories within the book as well. Conflicts between parent and child, between old friends maybe more than friends, and between a divorced couple. All the characters are well devoped and you can relate to them. The ending is perfect. IMHO this book is a KEEPER
