Say Goodbye, by Lisa Gardner
In the notes at the end of the book, Gardner describes this as her most violent book yet. She isn’t kidding. But as challenging as the material is, I could not stop turning the pages until the chilling finale.
The blurb: Now pregnant, FBI Special Agent Kimberly Quincy takes on the most dangerous case of her career, involving half a dozen missing prostitutes, two kidnapped children, one lying informant, and a villain who is obsessed with spiders. Get ready to be very, very scared... Not kidding! Although Kimberly and her family have featured in previous Gardner books--Kimberly met husband Mac in THE KILLING HOUR, I think--this book stands strongly on its own substantial legs. You may still want to go back and see how they met and to discover more about the Quincy family history in THE THIRD VICTIM, THE NEXT ACCIDENT and GONE, as this book isn’t only about the case. Kimberly is still struggling with her past, the reason she is driven to work so relentlessly, and the changes motherhood will bring to her career and her marriage. This is what I loved about the book: the very human motivations, the fact that every time I wanted to shake Kimberly I also understood. I felt for her and for Mac and wonder how she will ever come to grips with the past, and I loved how each step in the suspense plot impacted her and made her decision all the harder. Hopefully there will be more Quincy stories; they are my favourite Gardner books.
