Secret Seduction by Susan Napier

Harlequin Presents #2135 ~ October 2000

Nina’s content in her rented cottage on Shearwater Island off the coast of Auckland. Nine months before on the ferry over, she’d fallen and knocked her head and when she came too she realized she’d completely whipped out the last two years of her life. Feeling healthy otherwise, Nina decided to just move on with her life and perhaps the memories would come back. One evening a huge storm swept the island and Nina discovers a stranger outside her cottage having been knocked down by a tree struck by lightening. She manages to get him safely inside, when she see the huge gash on his head. A neighbour is a doctor and he comes over to stitch up the stranger, a stranger who doesn’t recall his name. Only when his overnight bag is found are they certain that his name is Ryan. No one can leave the island until the storms pass, so Nina has no choice but to keep him. And when her landlord returns and hires Ryan to do repairs to the cottages, Nina is forced to keep him even longer. There’s something about this man that makes her uncomfortable, and slowly glimpses of her missing life begin. Nina fights it all, she knows instinctively that getting close to Ryan will only bring her unbearable pain.

This is an amazing story. It was a little confusing at first with all the amnesias! Ryan was honestly dazed from the knock on the head, but he took advantage of that in order to be close to Nina. We find out about mid book that he’s come to find her. It’s obvious that Ryan loves her very much but he’s holding back. He knows that for Nina’s sake she needs to find her past on her own. Something happened, and in order to protect herself Nina blocked out all things that were associated with her loss, and that meant blocking out Ryan. Nina realizes that unless she finds the courage to confront her past she’s going to lose Ryan forever. I loved these characters and I thought Nina’s amnesia was very realistic as were their reactions to one another. They have a sizzling chemistry that is very well done; a shower scene comes to mind! I read this one twice, and on the second reading I picked up the nuances that I missed with the first reading and came to appreciate Ms. Napier’s talent even more.

Aw, sounds like an

Aw, sounds like an interesting twist.  Susan Napier has good twists (*cough* Secret Admirer *cough*)  Her first chapters set up dramatic and surprising moments.  I like her books.  This week I reread a book of hers I loved a few years ago, "In Bed with the Boss", and I also read "Price of Passion", I'll have to get my butt moving with my reviews, it's nearing the 50 mark of unblogged July books...  *blushes*

This book sounds fun and Ryan sounds like he really cares.

Hi Katherine

This one sounds good. At first, I thought that I had read wrong about them both having amnesia. That is a bit odd but I'm glad it works for the book. I'm curious as to why she is blocking things out.

There is only one ubs in my area that carries romance. It's about 30 miles away. I rarely go in that direction so, when I was headed that way on Thursday, I had plans to look for a lot of the Presents that have been recommended. This place had a nice selection of them. I was so upset! The store is gone so I'll need to look for these another way.

Sounds like a Keeper

After reading your review, this sound like a very interesting book.  So, I went to look for this book, couldn't find it the HQN Ebook site, nor the Amazon-Kindle site. Cry

Marge & Orchid ....

when I can't find an older out of print at my local UBSs, I buy them online .... there are a few online stores that I can highly recommend

http://www.sleepygirlsusedbooks.com/ ..... email about a price break on the shipping, Dawn is usually very good at giving price breaks

http://abooktrader.com/    ... again email Jackie for a shipping break if you're ordering a few books

http://www.myunicorn.com/ ... not much you can do for their rates, but they sell quality

http://www.wagglepop.com/stores/rebeccas-books-and-more   .... Rebecca is very good to deal with ... email her for help with shipping costs before you buy ... in fact, she may decide to sell off this site if you can pay via PayPal

http://www.biblio.com/account_menu.php  ... great UB resource,  try to purchase multiple books from the same seller ...always a good idea to email the seller before you buy to see if they can help with shipping costs

and then if you are in the US ... try  http://shops.half.ebay.com/    .... and for others there is always ebay
