Secret Surrogate by Delores Fossen (HI 895)

Three years ago, Kylie Monroe was working as a deputy for her best friend's husband, Sheriff Lucas Creed, when she neglected to wait for backup and pursued armed robbery suspects who fired at her and accidentally shot and killed said best friend, Marissa, who was 2 months pregnant. Lucas has never forgiven her and Kylie quit her job and dropped out of society, moving into her grandmother's house outside town.  But she promised Marissa that she'd help Lucas heal and so now she's carrying Lucas's baby as his secret surrogate without his knowledge.

Lucas hired a surrogacy agency but it isn't until he gets a 911 call from Kylie reporting intruders on her property that he finds out she's the one carrying his baby.  That night he sees two men kidnapping Kylie and is just able to save her.  Once he realizes it's his baby she's carrying, he knows he will have to get over his anger and take her into protective custody...but who is after her - is it the surrogate clinic guy or the surrogacy lawyer who Kylie alluded to or is it Marissa's sister who is crazed by hate for Kylie?  And will Lucas realize that he wants Kylie in his life more than just their baby?

For the most part, I liked this book.  Some advice to authors though: when you're going to use a turn of phrase that isn't necessarily the most common, don't make all your characters use it.  In this book just about every character says at some point "My advice?  [blah blah blah]" -- this really really confuses your characters' unique voices.  I would never talk like that and I would def never expect that  at least 4 out of the say 10 characters we hear talk would say that exact thing.  Also the line "It was as if his body seemed to know that her stomach carried his own precious cargo" is a little over the top and icky to me.  Otherwise overall though the romance was well done and realistic and the book was enjoyable.
