Description & Critique:
The formidable Blake Hamilton was Kathryn Mary Kilpatrick’s guardian. Ever since her parents died, she lived with him and his family. Blake was all man and not one easily read or easy to get close to. He was a cynic. He no longer believed in love. And for some reason, Kathryn saw fit to push all his buttons and before long, they shared a few kisses even though he was on the verge of getting engaged to another woman. When the other woman made their plans plain to Kathryn, she knew she had to move out of Blake’s home or be completely destroyed watching him live happiness with another woman.
This was definitely one of my favourite Diana Palmer books to date. I haven’t read many, though. This is an older book from 1982. It was from the Here Come The Grooms themed collection and it also seems to be part of Western Weddings. I found many different covers for this book so it’s probably been reprinted quite a few times and included in different collections over the years.
I really loved this story. It reminds me of Harlequins I read back in the 1980s. There’s a certain innocence in the book. It had such a different feeling from the current books. For instance, the whole story was told from the h’s viewpoint. We never got to see what our leading man was thinking. As a matter of fact, very few people in the story knew what the leading man was thinking. Although, for the most part, I prefer to see in his head, this was a nice change.
Our leading lady was very young compared to our leading man but they had known each other for so long. One could understand how they came to care for one another.
One thing that we don’t see much anymore in romance books are leading men who smoke. I’m almost allergic to the smell of smoke so every time our leading man lit up, I couldn’t help cringing. If I were with him, I would get all congested.
Vivian, our romantic complication, led our leading lady to believe an engagement was imminent. I would have liked to hear more details on why she did this but at the end of the day, it really didn’t matter.
There were no dull moments in this book. From page one until the end, I was riveted. I wanted to know what would happen to bring our leading man and our leading lady together.
I’m not sure the back blurb did this book justice. And IMHO, neither did the title.
If you happen to find this book at a UBS, I recommend getting it. It was good entertainment unless you don’t like the style of the older Harlequins.
Favourite Scene:
Upon Kathryn’s first encounter with her enemy in the game of love, Vivian, she really put the sophisticated actress in her place. I think is one of my favourite scenes because our leading lady is so young and inexperienced. It was nice to see her fight fire with fire.
