The Sheikh's Blackmailed Mistress by Penny Jordan (HP 2740)

Back Cover:

Life has taught Prince Vereham al a'Karim bin Hakar to control his emotions. Duty to his kingdom drives the enigmatic sheikh.
But one unexpected, intensely sexy encounter with inexperienced Samantha McLellan shakes Vere's steely control. And when he discovers that Sam could be betraying his country, he decides to blackmail her—into being his mistress!

Favourite Scene: (she just told him it wasn't likely she was pregnant)

Vere had no idea why Sam’s assertion that she had not conceived his child should make him feel that dark bitterness and pain. All he did know was that it also made him feel angry and alone. Shamefully, it also made him feel that he wanted to take her back in his arms and make love to her until she was crying out to him to possess her. And this time when he did so he wanted to ensure that…That what? That he impregnated her with his seed? That her body, her womb, would ripen with it and with his child? The fierce clutch of savage joy at his heart was giving him a message that was totally at odds with the logical rejection inside his head.

My Review:

I love the opening scene where the H/h literally bump into each other for the first time and there's a long pause of awareness, and they kiss without saying anything.  Very taut scene and it was sweet how memory of that meeting tormented him for months after.  Then when they meet again by chance, she says "you!" and there's this taut silence and this look exchanged, mmmm!  The conflict in this book was kind of unique: at first it was an external conflict where the hero believed the heroine was out to harm the political stability of his land, but that was relatively quickly disproved and then there was an internal conflict of the hero not wanting to be vulnerable to loving because in his past he had loved and been hurt when he lost his parents.  I think the conflict was good, though some might think the hero strange for being afraid of loving and wanting to let the heroine leave him!  About the cover: very good cover, love the positioning of the H/h, the H looks yummy, but is black very slimming or are his thighs very thin?

My Rating: 4/5 stars, good story, I thought the hero was capable of loving very intensely.

FYI: there are two books.

FYI: there are two books.  This is Vere's story.  If you want to also read Drax's story, which came first, it's "Taken by the Sheikh".  They are both stand alone though!  I haven't read Drax's story yet.
