Caitlin O'Hara really really wants to become a mother so she takes up dating random men to see if they could be the dad. After one date tries to drug her wine, she realizes maybe this isn't the best way and gets some info on a sperm bank. Her best friend and neighbor Jake Roberts finds out and isn't thrilled - he's actually kinda jealous and upset that she didn't think of him. Anyway they end up sleeping together one night but Cait is afraid that if Jake thinks she likes him it will ruin their friendship so she runs away on a 2 week vacation... during which she realizes that one night made her pregnant. Jake on the other hand thinks that she's off visiting the sperm bank while she's away. And when she gets back she deliberately lets him think it's a sperm bank baby...
Jake rallies around Cait and the baby anyway, even to the point of moving in to help with building the nursery, etc. But Cait still doesn't tell him it's his...Will she get up the nerve to tell him before it's born? Will Jake be able to convince Cait to marry him no matter who's baby it is?
My favorite scene is one where Jake and Cait are lying in bed together just cuddling and Jake starts asking quiet questions about the baby's father. It made me appreciate him...on the other hand, I didn't really ever appreciate Cait at any point during the book. I took exception to the plot set up with a woman who would do anything to have a baby, screw the baby's future feelings about her father or the father's feelings. I also didn't like how Cait hated her "kinky" hair and wanted to do anything to avoid passing it onto her baby...and still felt that way at the end of the book (ie, no real character growth). I also wasn't a fan of the imaginary conversations with cartoons Jake would have or Cait's random nightmares over how to tell Jake...So yeah, not my fav book.
