Small Town Girl, LaVyrle Spencer

I hadn't read this in at least 3 years, so I pulled it out of my bookcase for a re-read.  Everytime I pull out on of Spencer's books, I'm reminded of why I started writing romance and why I love what I do so much.  She writes so very real characters, so beautifully drawn, with deep emotion and plausibility.

Small Town Girl is the story of Tess McPhail, country music superstar who comes home to look after her ailing mother for a month.  The boy next door, Ken Kronek, was the class nerd and Tess still doesn't like his intrusion into her family.  But her opinion over the next month changes as she sees the goodness in him, how he has raised his daughter alone and how he's like a son to her mother.

Family dynamics are huge here and it makes for a lovely wistful read with a beautiful happy ending.

This was a good book. I love LaVyrle Spencer. I have several of her books on my shelf. One of my favorites is The Endearment. Too bad she had to retire.
