Soucouyant is a heart-wrenching story of a man, really a boy, dealing with his mother, who suffers from the early onset of dementia.
A throw back to my West Indian heritage, the story begins with an old West Indian folklore. A soucouyant is a spirit who, by day is an old woman, and by night takes the form of a wandering fireball, sucking the blood of her victims. The woman in the story, Adele, truly believes to have seen this horrible being. And so her son must come to terms with her mother's "reality"... I read this a little while
I read this a little while ago, too. It's set in a part of Scarborough that I grew up in so reading about the characters interacting in places I've been was really interesting. I really liked his writing style too.
