We start with a taxi pulling up at the back door of Allie Freeman’s employment. She had forgotten the Met’s tickets she had gotten for her brother on her desk. Tomorrow would be to late so as exhausted as she was this one last trip would finally finish her day.  As she walks toward the building she hears voices and slows down not wanting anything, including some conversation, to slow this trip.  She ends up stopping as she hears her boss, and he didn’t sound happy. She sees her boss, a woman (Kathleen but she’s not sure what dept.), and two men behind her. There seemed to be some disagreement going on and the next thing Allie knows her boss pulls out a gun and shoots the woman directly in the chest. Allie was frozen for a bit then slowly tries to inch backwards as not to alert anyone. Her boss’s face, and his lack of expression at this moment, was very chilling. Now we jump a year in time and a woman in running for her life through some back alleys in Chicago. She gets stopped abruptly when she literally runs into former bounty hunter Gideon Ross. After first thinking she was caught she ends up using the arrival of Gideon to elude the man chasing her.  Gideon was there for reasons of his own and this woman seemed to be just the key he needed to keep track of.  While trying to get away from Gideon, and the current threat she was under, she tries to escape only to be caught by the real bad guy. Gideon once again saves the day but he also takes charge of the women by handcuffing her. After hearing a multitude of names from his mystery woman he decides to pick one of them and starts calling her Allie. As they start off on the road Gideon tries to unravel his mystery woman and the situation he finds himself in and finds it is a bit more complicated than he at first thought.

This was a very complicated and layered mystery.  I don’t think I gave any essential details above to ruin the book, as you really need to experience everything for yourself with no knowledge. If I did give away too much away for someone here I am sorry, that was not my intention. If you like mysteries at all you will really enjoy reading this one. Kerry packs a lot of mystery and intrigue into this story. The conclusion here was very satisfying although there were actually several different directions the book could have gone in. Smile
