Teaming Up by Abby Gaines

(Harlequin NASCAR - August 2008)

Rating: Very Good

This is a great book--definitely my favourite of the NASCAR books I've read this year.

Kim Murphy comes from a NASCAR family and loves racing, though her career is as a scientist. Her health is failing, and she comes across a list she made as a teenager: "Things to do before I die". One on the list is "date a jock", so she impulsively asks out NASCAR car chief Wade Abrahams...and he accepts!

I loved all of the characters in this book, particularly Kim and Wade. As a bit of a nerd myself, I'm always drawn to the nerdy characters, and Kim is very believable--smart, both confident and insecure, and with a great sense of humour.

Wade as well has an appealling combination of humour and intelligence, and so their relationship feels very natural despite their differences. I particularly enjoyed their initial awkward and teasing conversations--so much fun!

Kim's illness lent a real sense of depth to the emotions in the book; having been quite sick myself (temporarily) I could really relate to her character's emotions and the difficulty of deciding who to trust. I'm not quite sure how I felt about the book's ending...the only part I didn't really love.

The secondary relationship was fun as well, and I appreciated that we got to spend a good chunk of time with those characters and see some depth there as well--it wasn't just a throwaway plotline.
