This was a wonderful book. It has a very interesting story and great characters. It centers around forensic specialist Kyra Elliot and FBI agent, Joshua Richards. Kyra works for the Maryland state crime lab. Unfortunately, some severe spring rains have caused flooding and in an area of one of the recreation parks where people often bird watch, skeletal remains were found. Apparently the flooding unearthed them. It is up to Kyra to try to identify the person or persons that the bones belong to.

            Joshua Richards is an FBI agent that has become reckless in recent months, reckless with his own life. While working undercover, he has jeopardized an ongoing investigation and been pulled off the job, by his boss. As a way to keep him occupied and out of harm’s way he has been assigned to assist the Maryland crime lab with the investigation of the bones that were discovered.     

            Kyra and Josh have worked together in the past on cases where a forensic anthropologist was required for an FBI investigation. At those times Kyra was working at the university. Kyra has always had a bit of a crush on Josh, so it makes working so closely together, very difficult.  Now their roles are reversed. Kyra is, in a way, Josh’s boss on this assignment. They worked very well together in the past, but Kyra notices some changes in Josh. He is very tight-lipped, cautious, and prickly.

            During the investigation they make discoveries about the bones and each other. As the mystery of the bones unfolds, Josh is drawn to Kyra’s quiet competence and also to her faith. Josh has had a bit of a rocky relationship with God. He finds Kyra’s faithful belief of a higher being, very intriguing. He also enjoys the time he spends with her both off and on the job. He’s been helping Kyra with her “teens” on the weekends and getting to like the teenage girls. The girls are all in the foster care system. As Kyra begins to identify the bones, she and Josh discover that these victims were also part of the foster care system and fear that the person responsible for their deaths may very well be a part of that system also or at least on the fringe of it.
