Twilight, by Stephanie Meyer

Format:
Series:

Twilight is both startlingly different and a  blast from the past. First up, I should say that I don't like vampire stories, they creep me out. But I'd heard so much about this book that I wanted to see what the fuss was about, so I bought it.

Right from the start, Twilight is incredibly well written (hard to believe it's a debut novel, its so well-conceived) and very gripping. Ms. Meyer introduces certain precepts to make the vampire element more, shall we say, palatable Smile, but it's still very much there. However, the romance is strong and compelling--this is where the blast from the past comes in... The hero, Edward, has the dictatorial, sardonic and sometimes angry nature (but also intelligent, thoughtful and tender) of the heroes I loved back in 1970s and early 1980s Mills & Boon and Harlequin books. I think it's his character that makes the romance in this book so strong.
