Sloane Burbank is a former FBI agent, who after an injury decided to leave the FBI to become an independent consultant on personal defense. She is contacted by the parents of a childhood friend who went missing almost a year before. She decides to use her contacts to help locate her friend whose case has gone cold. Problems begin when she finds out that her former lover Derek Parker was the FBI agent of record on the case. Their relationship fell apart after Sloane's injury and exit from the FBI. Neither of them is happy about working together but as more women start to disappear and it becomes clear that the same person has kidnapped them (and may be a serial killer) they put aside their differences (in an interesting way) to find the women.
The unresolved feelings between Sloane and Derek add depth to this fast-paced romantic suspense thriller. These two are good together in more ways than one. The villian is very twisted and some scenes are graphic and scary (don't read the book late at night!) but the book is hard to put down. The ending is somewhat predictable but is never-the-less satisfying.
I had read many of Kane's historical romances but this is the first of her rom/sus books I've read. She has a different voice in these books--very edgy. This is apparently the first in a series and I look forward to reading more. I would recommend this book for those who like their rom/sus edgy and aren't put off by graphic details. Derek and Sloane make it worth the read!
