Country auctioneer, Daniel Ramsey doesn’t know what to make of the young woman dressed to the nines, who seems to hold him in low esteem; somewhere she’s gotten the idea he’s out to scam her grandma. His first thoughts are that Freya Anthony lives up to her bad girl reputation, and hasn’t lost that spoilt attitude. Between running his auction house and struggling as a single father to a rebellious 15-year-old daughter, Daniel doesn’t need the complications Freya can bring to his life. And when he sees the former town bad girl talking to his troubled teen he lashes out at her, and instantly regrets it when he sees the sudden pain in her eyes that she quickly hides away. Freya left Fellingham 12 years ago as a rebellious and scared 17 year old. She’d vowed never to come back, and hadn’t until her grandmother needed her help to close up her house. And just as it was the day she left, Fellingham’s gossipers were wagging their tongues because the wayward Freya had returned. Freya can’t help but see herself in Daniel’s daughter Mai, only in Mai’s case she has a parent who loves her unconditionally, even though she doesn’t believe it. What started out as help to the struggling father, soon becomes a bonding. But Freya knows the town will always gossip about her, and the fact that after three years, Daniel is still wearing his wedding ring tells her that he’s not ready to move on.
This is a beautiful story of lonely hurting souls finding each other. Natasha Oakley is a favourite author and with each book she writes she shines more and more. This is not a light and fluffy romance, this one really packs a wallop. Though in London Freya had been a huge success and a very self confidant businesswoman, back home all the teenage pain and feelings of rejection crush in on her. She wants Daniel’s approval but she’s not going to fight gossip to get it. Daniel is the perfect hero. He’s been loyal to his wife’s memory and a caring father who admits he’s out of his depth when it comes to his daughter. He can see the hurt teenager inside of Freya and listens when she sheds some light on what his daughter might be going through. Their’s is a beautiful lovestory, one I’ll want to read again and again.
