The Wings of Morning by Karen Harper (Dutton)

The Wings of Morning is (I believe) Karen Harper's first novel back when she was writing historical romance. It is an excellent book. It was written in 1993 but has held up well.

This is the story of Abigail who grew up on St. Kilda (one of Scotland's far isles.) She is a woman ahead of her time because her parents educated her, which was unheard of for this time and place. (1850's) She is an interesting heroine and Morgan, the hero, is a good match for her.

Much of the book is quite sad as Abigail tries to determine the cause of so many infant deaths on St. Kilda. After she loses her own infant son to this strange condition she makes it her life's work. She travels to England and eventually to Sanibel Island in Florida during the course of the book. Although much of the book is sad it is full of interesting people and places and does have a good hopeful ending.

I enjoyed this book although it was heart-breaking at times and would recommend it to those who enjoy older historicals or who just want an absorbing read.
